In the past week we’ve seen an unprecedented trio of big-name releases, including Angry Birds Star Wars launching at the exact same time with other platforms on Thursday. Well Windows Phone looks like it’s still making big strides, because two more huge hits have finally migrated to Windows Phone: Zynga’s Draw Something and Words with Friends.
For those who may have never heard of these games, we’ll summarize them briefly. Draw Something is essentially a turn-by-turn game of Pictionary where you draw a picture that best hints at the word you select. If your opponent guesses the word correctly, they gain points. Meanwhile, Words with Friends is also best compared to its family game counterpart, Scrabble. You are given a set of letters and a board to play on, and each player takes turns playing the letter to form a word. Points are earned depending on the complexity of the word, the variety of the letters, and through some special spots on the board.
Announced at the Windows Phone Summit earlier this year, although it was originally labeled as a Nokia exclusive. A few days ago, users spotted Words with Friends in the Nokia Collection but it was quickly pulled without warning. Today, the release comes as a surprise once more and it is available for all Windows Phones, running 7.x and 8.
The good news mostly ends there however, since the pricing strategy Zynga has used is sure to cause some frustration. Both games cost $2.99 with no free trial available for either, which means it’s all or nothing if you want the game. While Windows Phone fans are used to dealing with higher-priced games by now, we are concerned that newcomers to the platform will be put off by the ‘tax’ levied against the growing platform.
You’ll have to weigh the pros and cons before making your decision, but considering just how popular these games are we’d expect most would willfully (or perhaps begrudgingly) pay up. After all, Windows Phone users can finally play against their iOS and Android friends in two of the biggest success stories in mobile gaming.
