Expectations are high surrounding the next few software updates coming to Windows Phone 8. We’ve already heard about a series of updates coming this year to precede the next major version of the OS. Now we have more details about the most recent of these updates, dubbed GDR2.
Ten cents if you guessed that The Verge’s Tom Warren reported about this, because he’s on a roll today after the previous Sprint report. His sources claim that the GDR2 update will be reviving one of Windows Phone 8′s lost features: FM Radio support in the Music + Videos Hub. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard that FM Radio will return to Microsoft’s OS, though that previous rumor also claimed the Bluetooth stack in Windows Phone devices would be updated to 4.0. Warren doesn’t mention that in his report, only saying that FM Radio will come to ‘compatible devices’ and so far that includes the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820.
Speaking of Nokia devices, Warren has also revealed that the company is going to introduce a few new features in an upcoming firmware update. The highlight of the new features is a new ‘double tap to wake’ ability, where you can unlock a Lumia device simply by tapping twice on the screen. Other features include a color profile settings page (spotted by WPCentral earlier this month) and the return of flip-to-silence.
Expect to see the updates roll out over the coming months.
